In 2023, CT Construction LTD were tasked with the demolition works to remove an existing footbridge over a disused railway track and provide a new equestrian subway under the A632 Station Road in Bolsover.
The new subway was to be formed by jacking precast reinforced concrete box units through the old 'Bolsover Castle Station' road bridge which carries the A632 over the disused railway track. In addition to this, two concrete wing walls were also constructed to retain the new footway supported by the box units.
The initial tender proposed that the 14no. of PCC box culvert units would be delivered to site overnight and offloaded from the A632 using a 300T crane under a night time working regime. However, CT Construction LTD proposed an alternative construction solution by opting for an in-situ, precast hybrid system with only 1no. of subway unit needed as a precast element at the under-bridge level and hydraulically jacked into position.
On acceptance of the revised construction philosophy, CT Construction LTD appointed a structural designer to provide a 2-part buildable structure that could enable one part to be elevated and jacked into the final position beneath the existing railway bridge.
Following various site investigation works, a design was formulated and accepted by the DCC. The subway was constructed in two parts, one in situ beneath the existing the steel footbridge and the second cast outside on the disused railway track. At a length of 8m long and weighing 140T the second unit was carefully lifted from its temporary casting area and slid 12m into its final position beneath the existing railway bridge.
The project was completed over a 15 week period, and cost approximately £464,000.
